Barts Health NHS Trust

We have worked with Barts Health NHS Trust to reduce costs and carbon through plant room efficiencies.

Valve insulation installed in plant rooms

Estimated payback time of just under one year

Annual carbon savings of 729 tonnes

Challenge

  • Sustain approached The Trust with a view to help reduce the energy costs and carbon emissions of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The London Chest Hospital
  • The Trust’s environmental targets were a 3% reduction in carbon emissions year on year
  • The trust aims to reach the NHS and government carbon reduction requirement of 80% by 2050

Solution

  • Sustain completed free surveys of plant rooms on site at the The London Chest and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals to identify areas in which insulation upgrades could be made
  • Sustain then provided a detailed energy saving proposal which outlined the estimated carbon and kWh savings achievable from insulating previously exposed areas on the pipework
  • Sustain calculated an estimated payback period of just 0.9 years
  • Sustain were instructed to supply and fit the insulation

Results

  • Valve and pipework technical insulation installed at both hospitals
  • Estimated annual savings for The London NHS Trust of £9,986
  • An estimated 769 tonnes of CO2 per annum saved
Sustain provided a highly professional service, carrying out on-site surveys with no disruption, a business case proposal which highlighted the key elements required for investment and project implementation with ease. We are already seeing the benefits of the work carried out. An excellent service- Fiona Daley - Environmental Manager, Barts Health NHS Trust
