flange and valve insulation

Valve insulation, as recommended by the Carbon Trust, allows you to reduce heat waste from your heating systems and cut down your fuel bills.

We have installed valve insulation to over 6,000 boiler rooms around the country.

benefits

  • Free, no obligation plant room survey
  • The payback period is normally under two years
  • Tailor-made insulating jackets are easy to fit and have quick-release fastenings for easy maintenance access
  • Non-intrusive process with no disruption to the boiler operation
  • Work with our dedicated team, with experience in this specialised field
  • The measure is eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowances

why is insulation important?

Many organisations waste a significant proportion of energy through poor insulation of their heating systems. Improving insulation is simple and cost-effective.  Every uninsulated flange or valve will cost you around £20 a year in unnecessary fuel expenditure.

boiler room insulation

how it works

Each uninsulated flange, valve or length of pipe acts like a radiator, leaking heat into your plant room and wasting money though excess fuel bills.  Our insulation jackets cover up the exposed valves, thus stopping heat loss to the surrounding air - simple!

which buildings are suitable?

Most commercial scale properties will be suitable for valve insulation.  As a guide, if your boiler output is greater than 120kW, or your annual heating bill is over £3,000 then it is worth carrying out a survey of your plant rooms to indentify opportunities for insulation work.

how we can help

1. Calculation & Reporting of Energy Saving Potential of Valve Insulation
Our energy saving calculations are worked out per valve - rather than as a % of total site consumption.  This means we can produce more accurate predictions of how much energy can be saved by reducing heat loss from pipework.

We factor in the surface area of each exposed valve, the efficiency and operating hours of the heating plant, the fuel tariff and the carbon content of the fuel type to create our energy saving reports, which have been examined and approved by the Carbon Trust, OFGEM and Salix Finance.

2. Assistance with Preparing a Business Case for Investment
Sometimes valve insulation works are completed through capital budgets, and other times they need to be funded through financing options that are paid back from the resultant energy savings.  Whatever the circumstance, Sustain can assist with providing options, preparing evidence and making the case for investment in the most appropriate manner.

3. Support & Access to Financing and Funding Schemes
Sustain have access to funding from CERT (for domestic insulation schemes - e.g. blocks of flats, sheltered housing schemes) and access to interest free loans from Salix Finance and the Carbon Trust/Siemens Finance (for commercial insulation schemes).

4. Supply & Fit of Valve Insulation Measures
We provide the full survey, reporting, manufacture, delivery and fitting service for valve insulation covers.

We are also able to provide a survey & supply only service if desired.

5. Monitoring & Analysis of the Impact of Valve Insulation Works on Site Energy Consumption
Sustain are able to conduct monitoring exercises to record the impact of valve insulation works on heat loss from heating plant pipework, and on billed kWh consumption.

This evidence is a valuable tool to prove that the business case for investment was justified, and to identify and ring-fence energy savings derived from insulation work.

6. Thermal Imaging Before & After Installation to Highlight how the Insulation Works
Thermal imaging is a powerful supporting tool to help clients understand the need to insulate exposed valves by providing a clear visual representation of heat loss from heating plant.

Carrying out similar imaging after the installation is complete is also helpful to allow clients to see the change that the insulation has made to the plant room environment, and to prove the quality and completeness of the work.
