The Westminster Sustainable Business Forum (WSBF), a not for profit, cross-party organisation recently produced the report 'Leaner and Greener: Delivering Effective Estate Management' (the culmination of a wide ranging inquiry chaired by Matthew Hancock MP)1,2. The report sets out the key steps to formulating and, most importantly, putting into practice an effective estate management strategy.
Local government owns £250 billion of property, with an estimated one fifth of their revenue expenditure going into managing that property. The report states that a reduction in occupied space of 30% combined with other measures would realise potential operational cost savings of £7 billion. Local government will clearly be looking to property professionals to help it deliver effective estate management in order to offset the effects of funding cuts, improve services and meet their environmental objectives.
The 'Local Authority Estate Transformation' conference will discuss and expand upon the WSBF report findings and recommendations and will be held at Manchester Town Hall, June 8th, 2011.
Matt Fulford, Head of Buildings at Sustain will be discussing Sustainable Estate Management: Economic and Environmental Efficiency.
