A new book, the first of its type to give practical guidance on
assessing the embodied carbon of building materials, is now
available (from January 24).
Written by Craig Jones, senior associate at carbon reduction
company Sustain, the book provides construction professionals with
information so they can make informed choices about the energy and
carbon impact of materials used in buildings.
The book, called Embodied Carbon - the Inventory of Carbon and
Energy, is based on an online building materials database that
Craig created at the University of Bath, which is used by more than
10,000 people worldwide.
Annie Westaway, low carbon buildings manager at Sustain, said:
"Calculating embodied carbon is a complex issue and, for the first
time, the construction industry will now have a practical guide
which captures all the calculations on embodied carbon in one
place. It also gives information on how the inventory has been used
to drive down carbon at specific building projects across the
UK.
"This resource will be invaluable as legislation on this issue
continues to accelerate."
The book is published through The Building Services Research and
Information Association (BSRIA) and is available to members free of
charge or non-members can download it from the BSRIA website.
