Sustain has welcomed the new coalition Government's revisions to the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) scheme and believes it will encourage a more focused approach.
The scheme will ensure energy suppliers insulate more homes and the scheme has been extended from March 2011 until December 2012, saving an additional 108 million tonnes of CO2.
Simon Gait, director at Sustain, said:
"Sustain has been involved in delivering carbon reduction obligations for the energy companies for more than 13 years.
"We welcome this further increase to the target which will save an estimated two per cent of current household emissions.
"We also support the end to the promotion of energy savings light bulbs to meet suppliers' targets, allowing for a more focused approach to energy efficiency through the implementation of loft, cavity and solid wall insulation measures.
"By focusing 15 per cent of the additional carbon savings towards a 'super priority group' of householders on low incomes, the further carbon reductions will help eradicate fuel poverty in some of the most deprived householders in the country."
Sustain will continue to work with the energy companies under the CERT extension to deliver carbon savings programmes through both private and social housing.
The CERT extension has not come into law yet, but is due to be debated in parliament.
