Budget lacks detail on reducing carbon but will encourage businesses to ‘do more with less’

Sustain has welcomed the Government's emergency budget because it will encourage organisations to be more efficient but the company says that specific detail on low carbon policies is lacking.

Tobias Parker, Sustain's chief executive, said:

"The budget contained barely a mention of the low-carbon economy and the need to cut carbon emissions, which is disappointing.

"However, overall, we believe the budget will have a positive impact on reducing carbon, and therefore costs, in businesses.

"This is because our age of austerity means organisations must look to innovate and 'do more with less'. Many organisations are reaping the benefits of the leaner processes that come out of reviewing their energy hotspots and putting simple and often no or low cost measures in place to reduce their carbon emissions.

"There are already many examples of organisations that have generated new revenue streams, such as water treatment specialist Sentinel, which has developed a new revenue stream by moving into solar thermal technology in addition to traditional boilers. A more challenging economic environment may support this growing trend.

"We would like to see evidence of specific measures being put in place by the Government to support low carbon businesses as legislative changes are often the catalyst for changing people's behaviour, ensuring they focus on the opportunities presented by reducing carbon."
