Dr Sandy Smith has been appointed to a UK committee to advise on the development of an international standard in carbon footprinting of products and services.
Sandy, who is the consultancy services director at Sustain, has received the appointment from the British Standards Institute (BSI).
Sustain also advised on the development of the UK's own carbon footprinting standard before it was implemented in 2008.
This national standard, known as PAS 2050, enables companies to track their carbon footprint in a consistent, clear and transparent way.
It is now hoped that this will be replicated at an international level by standardising the measuring of carbon footprints throughout the world.
Sandy will now sit on the national sub-committee, known as BSI committee SES/1/7, which will develop the UK's view on the standard. Selected members of the UK committee will then be sent to international meetings to represent this position.
Sandy said: "I'm very pleased to have been asked to advise on this new international standard in carbon reduction. It shows how much Sustain's expertise is valued in the industry and it's great to be recognised on an international stage."
Sandy has more than 11 years of knowledge in the field of carbon footprinting and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and has an extensive client list, including Marks and Spencer, Co-Operative, Balfour Beatty, LINPAC Plastics and the Royal Mail. Along with his work at Sustain he also teaches at the University of Bath where he gained his PhD in Life Cycle Assessment.
