Sustain has worked with Sentinel Solutions since 2007 when it was appointed to carry out an organisational carbon footprint for Sentinel, which provides products that help with maintaining and restoring energy efficiency in new or old heating systems.
Following this initial assessment, Sentinel asked Sustain to measure the wider impact associated with the operation of its business by measuring the carbon footprint of its two biggest selling products - X100 Inhibitor and X800 Jetflo - in partnership with the Carbon Trust.
These are the first products in this sector to achieve and display the Carbon Trust's carbon reduction label.
Sustain measured all aspects of the products' supply chain including raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, packaging and use.
Dr Jean-Yves Cherruault, environmental accounting manager at Sustain, said: "We found that the areas of highest impacts - the so-called 'hotspots' in the lifecycle - were during transportation to retail outlets, storage at these retail outlets and the manufacture of certain chemicals for these products".
"Sentinel has now committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with these products by displaying the Carbon Trust's carbon reduction label on the X100 and X800."
In order to retain this label, Sentinel must show a reduction of the carbon footprint within two years.
The calculations were assessed according to PAS 2050 - the UK Government's widely accepted carbon footprint standard before being audited by The Carbon Trust.
