Energy saving measures

There are many steps you can take in your own home to improve your use of energy ranging from very cheap (or even free) options to very innovative, technical solutions which are much more expensive.  Have a look at the measures below to understand more about each one.

But also be aware that 2020 Vision Energy is just one local scheme working to improve energy efficiency.  Depending on your personal circumstances and special offers you may find that another scheme could offer you the same measure for a lower price.  It is always sensible to get more than one quote and we want you to get the best price.  We believe our prices are competitive and are constantly reviewing them but for links to other schemes and independent advice on energy efficiency click here to see our More Advice page

Insulation

An incredibly cost effective measure.  It is estimated that during winter 25% of all heat is lost through your roof and a further 35% through walls and windows.

Properly insulating your roof space and any cavity walls can significantly reduce this heat loss, saving money on heating fuel bills (estimated savings of up to £265 on an average family home) as well as keeping your home warmer and more comfortable.  Plus insulation prevents the house from getting too hot during summer too!

Current prices to put insulation in your home through 2020 Vision Energy are:

Cavity wall insulation = £269
New loft insulation = £269
Top up loft insulation = £299

Importantly, we recommend you get a number of quotes to ensure you get the best deal available for you and your home.  North Somerset Council's Warm and Well scheme offers special promotions to various groups through the year and the Government funded Warm Front is set up to help those in receipt of benefits.

Solar thermal hot water

A solar thermal system provides hot water to use in your home and is linked to your existing hot water supply so there is always enough hot water whenever required.  It has been proven that a solar thermal system can provide up to 70% of annual hot water requirements and saving you money on hot water heating bills.

On a sunny day the solar panels will heat water in your hot water tank to the desired temperature and your boiler will never need to be used.  On cloudy days the panels will still heat the water but your boiler may need to heat it the last bit to get it to the desired temperature.

Solar thermal systems aren't cheap but once installed they work very efficiently.

Save your 20%

EST, the Energy Saving Trust, is a key supporter of our 2020 Vision Energy project.  In October 2005 they launched the "Save your 20%" initiative which invited individuals to pledge to reduce their daily energy use by 20% through a variety of means.

The methods for energy saving range from only filling the kettle with the water you need, through replacing blown light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs right up to improving insulation and installing solar systems.

You can take the simple steps yourself.  We can help with the more complicated measures such as insulation and solar thermal systems.
