About the 2020 Vision Energy project

Overview

2020 Vision Energy is a local not-for-profit project run by Wrington-based business Sustain Ltd to promote the better use of energy by households in the area.  The objectives of the project are to:

"reduce the environmental impacts of energy use in Wrington Vale and deliver significant financial and carbon savings."

What does this mean?  To you, the resident, it means considering measures you can install in your own homes to save energy.  This might be insulation, solar panels or energy saving light bulbs.  It might be turning off lights when you're not using them or turning your room thermostat down by one degree.  Whatever it is, it is about understanding why it is important.

To us, the consultants, it means helping you put those things into action.  It means talking to the community and helping you understand some of the jargon.  It means putting you in touch with professionals who can help install measures where necessary.

Demonstration sites

To help people understand the importance of energy awareness we are using two demonstration sites in Wrington.  These public buildings are places that people from the community visit and see regularly.  They are places where children and adults alike can learn about energy and see measures in practice which they can replicate in their own homes.

Wrington Church of England Primary School

There are three prefabricated "portacabin" style classrooms situated on the playing field providing valuable teaching and learning space.  They can get very hot in summer and require lots of heating during winter to keep them warm.

In summer 2006 the 2020 Vision Energy project installed a sustainable straw bale insulation to one of these classrooms.  The improvements will save money on heating bills (money which can then be used for other resources at the school) and will provide an excellent environmental teaching and education facility.

The 2020 Vision Energy project also donated some brand new data loggers specially designed for use in primary schools for students to record and monitor temperature.

Wrington Vale Medical Practice

The doctors' surgery in Wrington was purpose built in the 1980s - unfortunately without many of the energy efficient measures which would be installed as standard today.  As a result they experience high heating bills and extremes of temperature in the upstairs offices.

2020 Vision Energy has submitted a proposal to make a number of changes in the building:

  • insulate the roof voids to retain heat in winter and keep offices cool in summer
  • install a new high-efficiency gas condensing boiler to minimise energy waste
  • fit a solar thermal system to provide hot water to sinks and consulting rooms

You can read more about these sites on our demonstrations page.  And you can read about progress and see photos in the news page of this web site.

How is the project funded?

2020 Vision Energy is being run by Sustain Ltd as a not-for-profit project with the support of some key partners - notable North Somerset District Council and the Wrington Village Association.  We have secured some funding from the Energy Saving Trust which may be spent on marketing, awareness campaigns and some community events such as workshops.

Because the scheme is not aimed at making money we are able to give local residents independent advice and negotiate rates based on larger volumes that residents might find on their own.
